PED smackdown

ESPN and Bleacher Report had just reported that MLB has issued a 80 game suspension to the Toronto Blue Jays Chris Colabello for testing positive for PEDs.

The report states that on March 13th, when the test was done, Colabello tested positive for the anabolic steroid Turinabol. Turinabol is listed as a banned substance under the MLB drug prevention and treatment program.

Turinabol is actually a very old steroid from the 1960s and really gained fame when it was found that East Germany was using it to enhance its Olympic athletes from 1974 to 1989. After this discovery by the rest of the world, Turinabol production was discontinued and even though it the ‘rights to manufacture’ was bought by another company they decided not to produce it. Currently the only way to get this drug is through black markets as no legitimate pharmaceutical company manufactures it. Reference

Colabello’s response to this has been “On March 13, I got one of the scariest and most definitely the least-expected phone calls of my entire life. I was informed by the players’ association that a banned substance was found in my urine.” Per ESPN.

This would be Colabello’s first PED suspension.

  1. A sad ending to what was a great MLB story. I really enjoyed watching “The Italian Stallion” last season during the Jays playoff push. If this particular item is only available via the black market, then his statement (“I have no idea how it got there”) carries little weight! I guess he would have a little more “horse sense” than to “saddle” himself with that type of foolishness! Hopefully he will prove all the neigh sayers wrong!!
